When it comes to harnessing the power of AI, one of the most accessible improvements you can make is enhancing the quality of your prompts. The quality of AI output is largely determined by the quality of your input—specifically, the prompt you provide. Let's walk through eight essential ingredients of an effective prompt to consider each time you interact with an AI chatbot or craft custom instructions for a GPT, Gem, or project.

Not every prompt requires all eight ingredients, but the more instruction, context, and constraints you include, the more useful your AI responses will be—and the less likely they are to stray off course.

Syntax: Markdown

First, let’s address the syntax you should use to structure and format your prompts for optimal chatbot interpretation: Markdown. Markdown is a widely recognized text formatting method, effective even in applications without rich formatting support.

A useful tool for composing Markdown is Dillinger. It displays plain text Markdown on the left and the formatted version—how the AI interprets it—on the right.

Here are the three key Markdown elements most critical for your prompts:

    Headings allow you to create sections and subsections within your prompts, improving readability for chatbots.
    • Use # Heading for top-level headings.
    • Use ## Subheading for subsections.
    • Use ### Sub-subheading for deeper nesting.
  2. Bold
    To highlight critical parts of your prompt, use bold text. In Markdown, enclose the text with double asterisks: **bold text**.
  3. Lists

Objective

The second required ingredient is the system’s objective—a concise description of what you want the AI to produce and achieve.

Context

In most cases, provide context: relevant information the chatbot needs or details to frame the situation, ensuring it approaches the task appropriately.

Task

For anything beyond the simplest request, break the task into smaller steps to enhance the chatbot’s effectiveness. Here are standard steps to maximize output:

Output Guidelines

Specify output guidelines for formatting, style, tone, and other attributes. You can use subsections for each category (e.g., format, style, tone).

Examples

When relevant, include examples to demonstrate a successful output. For complex tasks, provide input-output pairs (known as few-shot prompting).

Prohibitions

Specify what the AI should not do. Defining constraints prevents excessive creativity or inaccuracies, such as avoiding specific phrases or styles.

Success Criteria

Finally, include success criteria—a summary of the key rules and guidelines from previous sections. This is what the AI validates its output against in the final task step.

User Input

When invoking the prompt, provide the unique content (e.g., text to summarize) and any special instructions in the User Input section. For custom GPTs or Gems, System Instructions are set at configuration, while User Input consists of individual prompts sent to the chatbot.
